Mental Health Plans

When you attend a Clinical Psychology Session at the Psychology, Trauma & Mindfulness Centre, Medicare will rebate a substantial part of the cost of the session through their Better Access Scheme if you have a Mental Health Plan from your GP or Psychiatrist.

When making an appointment with your GP to discuss whether a Mental Health Plan is appropriate for you, it may be necessary to book a longer session as many GP’s require an extended consultation so that they have enough time to discuss things with you.

If you have a Mental Health Plan, Medicare will rebate up to 6 sessions, followed by a further 4 sessions if after review by your Psychologist and GP, your GP believes it would be beneficial for you to have further treatment. Medicare will rebate up to a maximum of 10 Clinical Psychology sessions per calendar year for specified conditions.

A Mental Health Plan can only be made out for an individual, not a family or a couple.

Currently the amount Medicare rebates for the cost of a Clinical Psychology session is $124.50 or $84.80 for a Psychology session.
Medicare will also rebate $31.65 of the cost of attending a Clinical Psychology group session, or $21.65 of the cost of attending a Psychology group session for up to 10 group sessions per calendar year.

You are able to attend Clinical Psychology and Psychology sessions without a Mental Health Plan, but you will not be eligible for the Medicare rebate.

Private Health Insurance

Most Private Health Insurance funds provide a rebate for Clinical Psychology sessions depending on the type and level of cover you have. Private Health Fund rebates can be applied instantly at time of payment for the session. Private Health Insurance rebates and Medicare rebates cannot be used at the same time.

Bulk Billing - not currently available

Bulk Billing is when a Psychologist decides to reduce their standard rate so that a person with a Mental Health Plan is only charged the cost of the Medicare rebate for their session. This means that they do not have to pay any “gap” – where the gap is the difference between the cost of the Clinical Psychology session, and the amount that Medicare rebate.

At the Psychology, Trauma & Mindfulness Centre, Bulk Billing may be available for people experiencing financial hardship or have exceptional circumstances and who also have a concession card. Please discuss the possibility of Bulk Billing with your psychologist at your initial consultation. All initial consultations for concession card holders will be charged the concession rate.

Please Note Our Cancellation Policy

If, for some reason you need to cancel or postpone the appointment, please give at least 24 hours notice to avoid incurring a cancellation fee, as this time has been specially set aside for you.

In any calendar year, the first two (2) cancellation fees will be $50 for Full Fee clients and $30 for Concession card holders, payable prior to your next appointment. All subsequent cancellation fees will be charged at 50% of the total consultation fee
